What is Supervised Contact in Family Court?
Supervised contact is not a standard arrangement; it is used solely as a safety measure when the court determines there are safeguarding concerns that make unsupervised time with that parent risky for the child’s physical or emotional welfare.

What is Supervised Contact? : Supervised contact is contact time between a child and a non-resident parent that is closely monitored by a trained professional or a suitable third party.
Location: It typically takes place in a neutral venue, such as a Child Contact Centre accredited by the National Association of Child Contact Centres (NACCC), or occasionally in a local authority setting, or in a specific relative’s home.
Purpose: The aim is two-fold:
Ensure Safety: To prevent any physical harm, emotional abuse, or inappropriate behaviour during the contact session.
Assessment: To allow the court and/or Cafcass to observe and assess the parent’s interaction with the child and their parenting capacity in a controlled setting.
Why is Supervised Contact Used in Barnet Family Court?
The court, following the paramount principle of the child’s welfare, will only order supervised contact when significant risks are identified. It is seen as a necessary measure to maintain a relationship between the child and the parent while mitigating these risks.
The most common reasons for ordering supervised contact in Family Court include:
Domestic Abuse – Supervision is used to protect the child from witnessing abuse, being drawn into parental conflict, or being subject to emotional manipulation by the abusive parent.
Physical Harm or Neglect– Applied where there are proven or substantial concerns about previous violence, neglect, or poor standards of care.
Substance Misuse – Used when a parent has a history of alcohol or drug misuse that may place the child at risk while the parent is under the influence.
Mental Health Concerns – Where a serious, unmanaged mental health condition is assessed as presenting a risk to the child during contact.
Reunification – After a long period of separation, such as following imprisonment or care proceedings, supervised contact may be used as a temporary step to safely rebuild the parent–child relationship.
Abduction Risk – Applied where there is a credible and serious concern that a parent may attempt to abduct the child or remove them from the UK.
Key Point: Supervised contact is almost always intended to be a temporary arrangement.8 The court will expect the supervised parent to address the underlying risks (e.g., through therapy or engagement with services) with the aim of progressing to unsupervised contact once safety has been established.
